Golden Rules of Caregiving

  1. When you are in the employ of somebody doing caregiving, always be the one to apologize first when there is friction. This does not mean that you are wrong, it means you are understanding that the situation needs to be resolved. Smile and then try again.
  2. Be more patient than you have ever been. Sometimes one thing can take ten times longer or more than usual.
  3. If a patient refuses to do something, stop, relax, and try an alternative. If this does not work, then do something completely different and come back when the situation is smooth again.
  4. Remember to contact your supervisor when you are out of ideas, for example when you have tried all the above steps, and nothing works.
  5. Give yourself time to relax and de-stress.
  6. It is healthy to let your patient do things for themselves as you will encourage physical, mental, and emotional stimulation. All these are important for a healthy life.
  7. When you see your patient needs help or assistance, always be there for them.
