In this chapter, you will gain a thorough understanding of ambulation and mobility, including how they are affected by age, diseases, and emotional issues. You will learn about the design and function of walkers and canes, and how these assistive devices support the body in ambulation.

The chapter will also cover essential steps to take before helping a client to ambulate, including the use of gait belts for safety. You will learn the proper techniques for transferring both elderly and young clients from bed to wheelchair, wheelchair to toilet, and wheelchair to chair.

Additionally, you will understand how to assist clients with exercises, whether they are able-bodied or bed-bound, to maintain or improve their mobility. The chapter will also explain the use of draw sheets, including when and how to use them effectively.
